The CPCNet MailScan uses all of the key antivirus engine technologies available in Symantec's complete line of award winning antivirus products including Bloodhound heuristics, NAVEXTM, and LiveUpdateTM. CPCNet MailScan detects viruses, worms, and Trojan Horses in all the major file types (WindowsTM files, DOS files, MicrosoftTM Word and Excel documents, etc.). Including various compressed file formats (ZIP, LZH, ARJ, ARC, tar, etc.). It can also detect mobile code such as JavaTM, ActiveXTM, and stand-alone script-based threats.

BLOODHOUND™
Symantec's revolutionary heuristic technology, which analyses programs and enables the user to repair an infected file immediately. Symantec's Bloodhound technology identifies unknown malicious code using heuristics.

Bloodhound technology has been shown to provide protection from more than 90 per cent of new macro Bloodhound sets up a "virtual computer" that tests for virus like activity while protecting your system from damage. Since a new virus reveals itself by its activities when a file is opened or scanned, Bloodhound opens a virtual environment to host the file. It then runs the file over and over, recording what the file is asking for and what it does. If a document is opened, for example, Bloodhound first checks to see if there are macros attached to the document. If not, Bloodhound ignores the file and it loads as usual.

Bloodhound then executes the macro over and over again. If the macro asks for another document or macro, Bloodhound supplies it with a virtual one and records what happens to the document or macro. If the macro asks for the time or date, Bloodhound supplies known trigger dates and times. Bloodhound records all the actions of the macro. After the file or macro is completely tested by Bloodhound, a complete picture of the true behaviour of the file or macro is revealed.

Symantec's exclusive modular engine technology. It allows Symantec to provide the most advanced up-to-date antivirus solutions to all customers across all platforms. Using NAVEX, CPCNet MailScan customers receive real time protection for MicrosoftTM Office viruses, JavaTM Viruses, Trojan Horses, 32-bit viruses, and more without the necessity of reinstalling the product, which lowers the overall cost of ownership. NAVEX technology separates the scanning engine from the scanning application. The scanning engine can be updated on its own, improved on its own, and redistributed as part of the standard Symantec antivirus definitions through LiveUpdate.
